GoodWe ESA battery review, from an installer

GoodWe has been in Australia since 2012 and has been a top-tier inverter brand here for most of that time. The ESA is their all-in-one home battery, and it is the product that has changed how I think about quoting storage for a straightforward suburban house.
I am a licensed electrical contractor on the Sunshine Coast (Lic# 92489) and an accredited solar installer. This is the practical review: what the design actually does for you, the numbers worth checking, and the honest limits.
What all-in-one actually means
Most home batteries are a two-part purchase. You buy a battery, and you buy a compatible hybrid inverter, and the two have to be matched correctly or nothing works. That pairing is where a lot of quoting mistakes happen.
The ESA collapses that into one product. The power module and the battery modules are designed as a single stack, pre-matched and largely pre-wired, and they go in together. The practical effect is a faster install, a faster commissioning, and one fewer place for a specification error to hide.
It is worth being clear about why that matters to you rather than to me. A shorter install is fewer hours on your invoice. A pre-matched system is one less compatibility question you have to take on trust.
The numbers worth checking
The single-phase ESA comes as inverters from 3 kW up to just under 10 kW, and the battery modules are lithium iron phosphate in a few sizes. The two common ones give you 5.0 kWh and 8.0 kWh of usable capacity per module.
Note that word usable again. GoodWe publish both the rated figure and the usable figure, and the usable one is what runs your house. Compare like with like across brands, because not every manufacturer leads with the same number, and the federal battery discount is calculated on usable capacity.
The whole stack is rated IP66, which is a genuinely high ingress rating for this class, and the single-phase power module is fanless and quiet at around 30 decibels. Both matter more than they sound if the unit is going somewhere near a bedroom wall.
There is a three-phase version too, running from 5 kW up to just under 30 kW, for larger homes and light commercial.
Backup is built in, and that is the headline
This is the feature I would buy it for.
On most systems, if you want the house to keep running in a blackout, you add a separate gateway or transfer box alongside the battery. That is another unit on the wall, another few hundred dollars or more, and more space in an already crowded switchboard area.
The ESA has a 63 amp bypass built into the unit for whole-home backup, and the published changeover time is under 4 milliseconds. Four milliseconds is fast enough that nothing in your house notices, including a desktop computer. It is also off-grid capable.
So on a job where whole-home backup is the goal, the ESA often works out cheaper and tidier than a nominally cheaper battery that then needs a gateway box added to it. That is exactly the kind of thing that is invisible when you compare two quotes on headline price alone.
The expansion detail nobody else offers
Here is a small thing that is quietly excellent, and it is unusual enough to be worth a section.
GoodWe explicitly permit mixing module capacities, and mixing older modules with newer ones, within the ESA stack. Most manufacturers require you to add modules that match what you already have, which becomes a problem three or four years later when your exact module is superseded and the answer is effectively "you cannot expand".
If there is a realistic chance you will want more storage later, that permission is worth real money. Confirm the current rules with your installer at quote stage, because manufacturers do revise them, but as a design philosophy it is the right one and it is rare.
The stack also ships with integrated aerosol fire suppression and arc-fault detection as standard, rather than as an upsell.
Where it suits, and where it does not
It suits you if you want whole-home backup without a separate gateway box, if you want a clean single-vendor system with less to go wrong at commissioning, and if you value the option to expand later with whatever module is current at the time.
Be realistic about the weight. The battery modules run from roughly 57 kg to 79 kg each. That is a genuine two-person lift for every module, every time, and it drives where the stack can physically go. The stack is also about 800 mm wide, so it needs real wall or slab space rather than a gap beside the meter box.
It suits you less if you want a single-phase system above 10 kW, which is where you move to the three-phase unit, and it suits you less if EV charging integration is a priority, because that is not part of this range.
