Sungrow home battery review, from an installer

Sungrow is the quiet giant of this industry. Founded in 1997, it is generally reckoned the largest solar inverter manufacturer in the world, it has had an Australian office since 2012, and in 2025 it was named the top volume residential battery brand in the country.

For a homeowner, that scale translates into something practical and unglamorous: parts availability, a real local support line, and a very large installed base of electricians who already know the product. I am a licensed electrical contractor on the Sunshine Coast (Lic# 92489) and an accredited solar installer, and here is the honest assessment.

The ranges, and what usable really means here

There are two families worth knowing. The SBH is the current generation and the one I would specify for a new install. The SBR is the earlier platform, still perfectly good, generally lower powered.

The SBH is lithium iron phosphate in stacked modules of 5.0 kWh each, giving units from 10 kWh up to 40 kWh, and several units can run in parallel for much larger systems.

Here is the detail that genuinely matters and that almost nobody explains: Sungrow quote 100 percent depth of discharge, so the rated figure and the usable figure are the same number. A 5 kWh module gives you 5 kWh.

That sounds like a technicality. It is not. Several competitors quote a nominal capacity and then usable is 90 percent of it, so a headline 47.9 kWh stack is really 43.1 kWh in your house. Because the federal battery discount is calculated on usable capacity, and because your evening consumption is measured in real kilowatt-hours, the usable number is the only one worth comparing. Ask every quote for usable, and compare those.

The SBR module is 3.2 kWh, in units from 6.4 kWh to 25.6 kWh, on the same principle.

Whole-home backup, with nothing extra on the wall

Backup on a Sungrow system lives inside the hybrid inverter, not in a separate box.

The popular single-phase hybrids carry a 63 amp bypass for full-house backup with a published changeover under 10 milliseconds. The three-phase range carries three 63 amp bypasses for whole-home backup on all three phases, at the same speed.

Ten milliseconds is fast enough that nothing in the house registers the event. Your computer stays on. This is the same architectural advantage the GoodWe ESA has, and it is a genuine cost saving against systems that need a gateway box added to achieve the same result.

The batteries are also off-grid capable when paired with a Sungrow hybrid, which widens what the system can be asked to do later.

The weight and footprint conversation

This is where I slow customers down, because the specification sheet makes it sound smaller than it is.

A 20 kWh SBH is about 196 kg and 900 mm tall. A 40 kWh SBH is about 376 kg and 1540 mm tall, standing on a footprint of roughly 675 by 350 mm. These are floor-standing units. There is no wall-mount option, and each module is a two-person lift.

The enclosure is rated IP55. That is outdoor rated, but it is a lower rating than some competitors in this series, and in practice it means the unit wants a sheltered position rather than a fully exposed west-facing wall. In a Queensland summer, shade and ventilation are not a nice-to-have for any battery, and this one is no exception.

None of that is a fault. It is a siting conversation, and it should happen before anything is ordered rather than on install day.

Where it suits, and where it does not

It suits you if you want a large, high-power system with whole-home backup and no extra boxes, if you value having the biggest support network in the country behind the product, and if you have a garage or plant room with real floor space.

The high continuous current is worth calling out: these systems will run heavy simultaneous loads, which matters if you have ducted air conditioning, a pool and an EV all wanting power at 6pm.

It suits you less if your install spot is a narrow side passage, because the footprint and the floor-standing requirement are firm, and less again if you want to mix and match with a third-party inverter, because the batteries are designed to pair with Sungrow hybrids.

One thing to check at quote stage: the ten year warranty runs to whichever comes first, ten years or a total energy throughput figure. For ordinary household self-consumption that is not a constraint you will meet. If you intend to trade energy aggressively on a virtual power plant tariff, cycling hard every day, ask your installer to do the arithmetic against the throughput allowance before you sign.
