Switchboard Upgrades
Your switchboard is the heart of your home's electrical safety. We replace tired ceramic fuse boards with modern, fully protected switchboards, quoted at a fixed price and certified on completion, direct from the licensed contractor doing the work.

Thousands of Sunshine Coast homes are still running on switchboards installed decades ago: ceramic fuses, no safety switches, unlabelled circuits and no room for anything new. Nuvolt Electrical upgrades those boards properly. A licensed Queensland electrician inspects your board, quotes the upgrade at a fixed price, then installs a modern switchboard with RCBO safety switch protection on every circuit, tested, labelled and certified to AS/NZS 3000. You deal directly with the licensed contractor, not a call centre.
Signs Your Board Is Past Its Prime
Open your meter box and have a look. If any of these sound familiar, your switchboard deserves a proper inspection.
Ceramic or rewireable fuses
The round porcelain plugs with a strand of fuse wire inside. They were fine in the 1970s, but they blow slowly, they can be rewired with the wrong gauge wire, and they offer zero protection against electric shock. Any board still running them is overdue.
No safety switches (RCDs)
A safety switch cuts the power in milliseconds when current leaks to earth, which is what stops a faulty appliance or damaged cable from electrocuting someone. Many older Sunshine Coast boards have one safety switch at best, and plenty have none at all.
Frequent tripping or blown fuses
A breaker that trips every time the kettle and the air con run together is telling you the board or the circuit is overloaded. Constant nuisance tripping is not something to live with. It is a symptom worth diagnosing properly.
Flickering or dimming lights
Lights that flicker when an appliance kicks in often point to loose or degraded connections in the board, an overloaded circuit or an undersized supply. Loose connections generate heat, and heat in a switchboard is how electrical fires start.
Asbestos backing panels
Switchboards installed before the late 1980s were commonly mounted on asbestos-cement panels. The panel is safe while undisturbed, but it means any work on the board needs proper handling, and it is a strong sign the whole board dates from another era.
A board with no room to grow
If your board is already full, there is nowhere to land a solar system, a battery, an EV charger or even an extra power circuit. A crowded, unlabelled board also makes every future electrical job slower and more expensive than it should be.
What a Proper Upgrade Actually Includes
A switchboard upgrade is not just swapping fuses for breakers. Done properly, it rebuilds the safety backbone of your home so every circuit is individually protected, clearly labelled and ready for whatever you add next.
- A new compliant switchboard enclosure, sized with spare capacity for the future
- RCBO protection on every circuit: each circuit gets its own combined safety switch and circuit breaker, so one fault trips one circuit, not half the house
- Ceramic fuses, old breakers and obsolete gear removed and disposed of properly
- Every circuit identified, tested and clearly labelled so anyone can see what does what
- Full compliance with AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules and Queensland requirements
- Testing of the whole installation before we leave, plus the appropriate Queensland electrical certificate for the work

Ready for solar, battery and EV charging
Solar inverters, home batteries and EV chargers each need their own dedicated circuit, correctly rated protection and physical space in the board. Most old boards have none of the three, which is why so many energy upgrades stall at the meter box. Because Nuvolt installs solar, batteries and EV chargers ourselves, we build your new board with that future designed in, so the next project connects straight in instead of starting with a second board rebuild.
Explore solar & battery →The insurance angle nobody mentions
Electrical faults are one of the leading causes of house fires, and after a fire the insurer's investigator will look at your switchboard first. An old board with rewireable fuses and no safety switches can raise hard questions about a claim, and some policies now treat safety switches as an expectation, not an option. A compliant, certified board closes that gap, and the Queensland electrical certificate we issue with every upgrade is your written evidence that the work was done right.
Inspected, Quoted & Certified
Inspect
A licensed electrician inspects your board on-site: age, condition, protection, capacity and any corrosion or heat damage.
Fixed-Price Quote
You get a clear written quote for the upgrade before any work starts. No hourly open chequebook, no surprises.
Upgrade
We install the new board with RCBO protection on every circuit, managing the power outage window with you on the day.
Test
Every circuit is tested: earth continuity, polarity, insulation resistance and safety switch trip times.
Certificate
You receive the appropriate Queensland electrical certificate, and a labelled board that documents itself.
Switchboard Upgrade Questions
Straight answers on old fuses, safety switches, asbestos panels, insurance and certification, from the licensed contractor doing the work.
How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?
The clearest signs are ceramic or rewireable fuses, no safety switches, breakers that trip often, lights that flicker when appliances start, or a board mounted on an old asbestos panel. If your home was built before the 1990s and the board has never been touched, it almost certainly lacks the safety switch protection modern standards require. The honest answer comes from an inspection, which is exactly what our electrical safety check covers.
What is an RCBO and why does every circuit need one?
An RCBO combines a safety switch (RCD) and a circuit breaker in one device, so each circuit gets both shock protection and overload protection on its own. The old approach of one shared safety switch across several circuits means a single faulty appliance can drop your fridge, lights and half the house at once, and finding the culprit is a nightmare. With an RCBO per circuit, one fault trips one circuit and the label on the board tells you exactly which.
Are ceramic fuses actually dangerous or just old?
Both. A ceramic fuse only protects the cable against gross overload, and only if it was rewired with the correct fuse wire, which after 40 years of handymen is a genuine lottery. It does nothing to protect a person from electric shock, because it has no earth leakage protection at all. Safety switches are the single biggest life-safety improvement you can make to an older home, and ceramic fuses are the sign you do not have them.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade before installing solar, a battery or an EV charger?
Often, yes. Solar, batteries and EV chargers each need dedicated circuits, correctly rated protection and physical space in the board, and many older boards have none of the three. Upgrading the board first, with spare capacity designed in, is far cheaper than doing it twice. Because we install solar, batteries and EV chargers ourselves, we build the board for what you are planning, not just for today.
Can an old switchboard affect my home insurance?
It can. Insurers increasingly ask about the age and condition of home wiring, and a claim investigation after an electrical fire will look hard at the switchboard. An old board with rewireable fuses can give an insurer grounds to question a claim, and some policies now expect safety switches as a condition. A compliant, certified board removes that doubt, and the certificate we provide is your evidence.
What about asbestos in my old switchboard panel?
Boards installed before the late 1980s were often mounted on asbestos-cement backing panels. Left alone they are low risk, but drilling or disturbing them releases fibres, so the panel needs to be handled and disposed of correctly as part of the upgrade. We identify suspect panels during the inspection and manage the removal safely and legally, so you are not left with a half-done job or a contaminated meter box.
How long does a switchboard upgrade take and will the power be off?
Most residential upgrades are completed within a day, and yes, the power is off for part of it while we change the board over. We confirm the timing with you beforehand, keep the outage window as short as possible, and everything is tested and back on before we leave. Anything unusual we found along the way is explained to you, not buried.
Do I get a certificate when the work is done?
Yes. After the upgrade is completed and tested, we provide the appropriate Queensland electrical certificate, such as a Certificate of Testing and Compliance. The board is also fully labelled, so the paperwork and the board itself both document what was done. That matters for insurance, for selling the home and for every electrician who works on it after us.

Where we do this
Switchboard upgrades keep us busiest in the older housing areas of the central Coast, where ceramic fuses and unprotected boards are still common.
