Nuvolt Electrical Solutions installs garden, deck, driveway, security and sensor lighting and weatherproof outdoor power across the Sunshine Coast, from Caloundra to Noosa and the hinterland, with fittings rated for rain and salt air and safety switch protection. The work is done by a licensed electrician (QLD Lic 92489) working from our Nambour workshop.
On the Sunshine Coast the backyard is half the house, and good outdoor lighting is what lets you use it after dark: steps you can see, a deck that feels like a room, a driveway that lights up when you pull in. Outdoor electrical work also has to cope with rain, sprinklers, UV and, near the beach, salt air that eats cheap fittings in a few seasons. Nuvolt designs and installs outdoor lighting and outdoor power across the Coast, with weather rated fittings, safety switch protection and controls that turn the lights on when you need them and off when you do not.
Outdoor Lighting and Power, Built for the Weather
From a pair of sensor lights on the driveway to a lit garden, deck and pool area on one set of controls.
Garden and landscape lighting
Spike lights washing up trees and palms, path and bollard lights along walkways, and soft lighting through garden beds. Many garden systems run at extra low voltage from a transformer, which suits beds that get dug and watered. We plan cable routes, transformer positions and fitting spacing so the garden looks lit, not floodlit.
Sensor and security lights
Motion sensor floodlights over driveways, side paths, sheds and entries. Placement is most of the job: a sensor aimed well catches a person at the gate rather than every passing car, and the light lands on the path instead of in the house next door. We set sensitivity, range and on time as part of the install.
Deck, patio and step lighting
Step and stair lights, downlights in patio ceilings and eaves, wall lights, and strip lighting under rails and benches. A covered deck is where plenty of Coast households spend their evenings, and putting its lighting on dimmers or separate switches lets the same space work for a family dinner or a late night.
Weatherproof outdoor power points
Outdoor power for barbecues, pool areas, garden tools, water features and festive lights, in weatherproof enclosures rated for where they sit, on circuits with safety switch protection. It ends the extension lead through the window, and gives plug in garden lights a proper outdoor outlet to run from.
What Good Outdoor Lighting Needs
Outdoor work lives in the weather for years. These are the details that decide whether it keeps working:
- An IP rating matched to the spot: under a deep patio roof is very different from a garden bed that gets hosed
- Corrosion resistant materials near the coast, such as marine grade stainless, quality powder coat and UV stable polymers
- Safety switch protection on outdoor lighting and power circuits
- Cable in conduit or otherwise protected wherever it could be dug up, mowed over or chewed
- Controls that suit the household: sensors, dusk to dawn photocells, timers or smart switches, with a manual override
- Warm colour temperatures and shielded fittings that light your yard without shining into the neighbours' windows

What an IP rating actually tells you
Outdoor fittings are sold with an IP rating, a two number code from an international standard. The first number is protection against dust and solid objects, the second is protection against water. Up to 6, a higher water number means stronger spray and jets. 7 and 8 are immersion tests and do not automatically cover jets, so a fitting that gets hosed should carry a 5 or 6. Some are dual rated, such as IP66/IP67. A fitting under a covered patio can get away with less than a spike light in a garden bed or a wall light facing the weather. The rating only counts if the fitting is installed the way it was tested, with seals seated and cable entries sealed properly, and that is where a lot of outdoor lights fail.
Salt air and outdoor fittings
Close to the water, salt settles on everything, and cheap outdoor fittings show it fast: pitted finishes, rusted screws, cloudy lenses and water getting past perished seals. Fittings made for coastal conditions cost more up front and last far longer. We choose materials for how close you are to the beach, and we avoid mixing metals that corrode each other when they touch in salty, damp air.

Outdoor Lighting Questions
Straight answers on garden lighting, sensor lights, IP ratings, coastal fittings and outdoor power, from the licensed contractor doing the work.
Can I install outdoor lights myself?
Plug in and solar garden lights, yes. Anything connected to your home's fixed wiring is different: a new outdoor light point, a hardwired sensor light, an outdoor power point or a transformer wired into a circuit is electrical work, and in Queensland DIY electrical work is illegal as well as dangerous. Outdoors the stakes are higher, because water and wet skin make an electrical fault far more likely to hurt someone.
What IP rating do outdoor lights need?
It depends on exactly where the fitting sits. The first number of an IP rating covers dust and solids, the second covers water. A light under a deep covered patio needs less water protection than a wall light facing the weather, a garden spike light that gets sprinklers and hosing, or anything near a pool. We pick the rating for each position rather than one fitting for the whole yard, and install it so the seals do their job.
Low voltage or mains voltage garden lighting?
Both have a place. Extra low voltage garden systems run from a transformer and suit garden beds, where cable gets dug near and fittings get moved as plants grow. Mains voltage fittings suit fixed positions like wall lights, eaves, security floods and bollards on permanent paths. Many yards use a mix. We design the layout, size the transformer to the fittings and protect the circuits properly either way.
Where should sensor security lights go?
Over the approaches people actually use: the driveway, the side gate, the path to the front door, and around sheds and bins. Aim and sensitivity matter more than brightness. A sensor pointed at the street triggers on every car, and a floodlight tilted too high lights up the neighbours' bedroom instead of your path. We mount, aim and adjust sensors as part of the install and set how long the light stays on.
Do outdoor fittings really corrode that fast near the beach?
Close to the water, yes. Salt laden air settles on fittings, attacks cheap metal finishes and screws, and gets into anything with a poor seal. Standard fittings that would last many years inland can look tired within a few seasons on a beachside deck. Coastal rated fittings in marine grade stainless, quality powder coat or UV stable polymers cost more and are worth it. The further back from the surf you are, the more choice you have.
Can outdoor lights run on a timer or from my phone?
Yes. The usual options are dusk to dawn photocells that switch on at dark, astronomical timers that follow sunset through the year, motion sensors, and smart switches you can schedule or control from an app. Combining them works well: path lights on a timer until late, security lights on sensors overnight, and a manual switch at the back door for everything.
Do outdoor lights and power points need a safety switch?
Yes. In Queensland, when a home's installation is extended with additional lighting and power point circuits, both must be protected by safety switches, and the Electrical Safety Office recommends safety switches on every circuit. Outdoors, near water and wet ground, that protection matters more than anywhere in the house. If your existing outdoor circuits are not protected, we will tell you and quote the fix.
