Halogen to LED conversions
The classic upgrade for 2000s-era homes: replacing hot, hungry 50 watt halogen downlights with sealed LED fittings that use a tenth of the power and run cool. We replace the whole fitting and transformer, not just the globe, so the fire risk and the failures go away with the halogens.
New downlight layouts
More than swaps: we design layouts for kitchens, living rooms and renovations so the light lands where you actually need it, with the right beam angles and spacing. No more dark benchtops or a grid of lights that misses the couch where you read.
Dimmers and colour temperature

A halogen downlight draws about 50 to 60 watts with its transformer; a quality replacement LED draws 7 to 10 watts for the same light. Multiply by fifteen or twenty downlights running a few hours a night and the upgrade typically pays for itself in a couple of years on energy alone, before you count never buying halogen globes again. Can I just swap the globes to LED instead of replacing the fittings?
Sometimes a retrofit LED globe will physically work in a halogen fitting, but it usually keeps the old transformer in the circuit, which is the least reliable part and a common cause of flicker and early failure. Replacing the complete fitting with a sealed LED downlight removes the transformer, runs cooler, restores your ceiling insulation coverage and gives you a product warranty measured in years. For a whole home, complete replacement is the upgrade worth paying for.
Are halogen downlights really a fire risk?
They are one of the better-documented residential fire causes in Australia. A halogen downlight can run at over 300 degrees, and older installs sit close to ceiling insulation and timber. Fires start when insulation is pushed against fittings or debris builds up around them in the roof. Sealed LED fittings run at a small fraction of that temperature and can be covered by insulation, which also fixes the cooling leaks halogens force into your ceiling.
What colour temperature should I choose?
Warm white, around 3000K, suits bedrooms, lounges and dining rooms where you want the home to feel relaxed at night. Cool or natural white, 4000K and up, suits kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and garages where you want clarity for tasks. Many quality fittings we install are tri-colour, switchable between temperatures, so you can change your mind per room without changing the fitting. Why do my LED lights flicker when dimmed?
Almost always a compatibility problem: an old leading-edge dimmer designed for halogen loads driving an LED that needs a trailing-edge dimmer, or a mix of fittings on one dimmer with different drivers. The fix is pairing LED-compatible dimmers with fittings that are actually rated to dim, which is how we install them. If you already have flickering LEDs someone else fitted, we diagnose and fix that too.
How many downlights does a room actually need?
Fewer, better-placed lights beat a ceiling full of them. As a rule of thumb a bedroom needs four to six, a living room six to eight depending on size, and kitchens need light planned over benches and the island rather than a uniform grid. Beam angle and spacing matter more than raw count. We plan the layout with you at the inspection so you get even, useful light without paying for fittings you do not need.
Do you do outdoor and security lighting too?
Yes. Eave downlights, wall lights, garden and step lighting, and motion-sensor floodlights around entries, driveways, sheds and pool areas. Coastal homes need fittings with proper IP ratings and corrosion-resistant finishes or they stain and fail within a few years of salt air. Sensor lights also need thoughtful aiming and sensitivity setup, which we do as part of the install, not left for you to fiddle with.
Is replacing downlights licensed work in Queensland?
Yes. Replacing a downlight fitting, its transformer or driver, or altering lighting circuits is electrical work that must legally be done by a licensed electrician in Queensland. DIY globe swaps in an existing compatible fitting are fine, but the moment fittings or wiring are involved it is our territory. Every job we do is tested, certified where required and covered by our lifetime workmanship warranty.
