Signs Your Home Needs More Outlets

Safety switches: the part people forget
In Queensland, new power point circuits must be protected by a safety switch, and plenty of older homes still have circuits with no RCD protection at all. When we add or move outlets we verify the protection behind them, and if your board is missing safety switches on power circuits we will tell you plainly and quote the fix. Old outlets are quiet fire starters
Loose, cracked or heat-stained outlets and worn switch mechanisms cause arcing, and arcing behind a plastic plate in a timber wall is how house fires begin. Can I add or move a power point myself?
No. In Queensland all fixed wiring work, including installing, moving or replacing a power point, must legally be done by a licensed electrician, and the penalties for DIY mains work are heavy because the failure modes are shocks and house fires. It is also fast, tidy work for us: most single points are done within the hour once we are on site, tested and certified.
How many power points can go on one circuit?
There is no single magic number: it depends on the circuit's rating, the cable, what else it feeds and what you plug in. That is exactly why we check the circuit before adding to it rather than just cutting another hole. If a circuit is already near its limit, we will say so and quote either a different circuit or a new one, so your new outlets are ones you can actually use at full load.
Are power boards and double adaptors really that bad?
A quality modern power board with overload protection, used sensibly, is fine for low-draw electronics. The trouble is what real households do: boards feeding heaters, kettles or dryers, boards plugged into boards, and double adaptors that concentrate load on one worn socket. Those are the setups fire services keep warning about. If a board has become permanent infrastructure in your home, that spot needs a real outlet.
Are USB power points worth it, and do they charge fast?
Good ones, yes. Quality outlets with USB-C Power Delivery ports charge modern phones at proper speed and free the mains sockets for everything else. Cheap units charge slowly and their internal supplies fail early, which is why we only fit reputable brands. Bedsides, kitchen benches and home office desks are where they earn their keep daily.
What does outdoor power need to be safe?
An outdoor outlet needs an IP-rated weatherproof enclosure appropriate to the location, mounting that keeps water out of the fitting, and safety switch protection on the circuit. Position matters too: under cover beats fully exposed, and near where you actually use equipment beats wherever the wall was convenient. Done properly, outdoor power ends the extension-lead-through-the-window routine for good.
Do induction cooktops and EV chargers need special outlets?
They need dedicated circuits rather than ordinary outlets. An induction cooktop typically needs its own high-capacity circuit from the switchboard, as do larger ovens, and EV chargers are hardwired on a dedicated circuit sized to the charger.
