Your switchboard is the most neglected thing in your house

I open switchboards for a living on the Sunshine Coast, and I can usually guess a board's decade before the cover is fully off. A lot of homes around Nambour, Caloundra and the older coastal suburbs are still running boards installed thirty or forty years ago, quietly doing a job they were never designed for.

That matters because everything electrical in your home flows through this one box. Modern life has piled air conditioning, induction cooktops, pool equipment, solar and EV charging onto boards designed for a house with a kettle and a television. The board does not complain until it fails, and when it fails the consequences range from inconvenient to catastrophic.

This guide covers the warning signs I look for, what an upgrade genuinely costs in this market, what the work involves, and why the switchboard is the first conversation for anyone considering solar, a battery or an EV charger.

The warning signs your board is past it

Ceramic fuses are the biggest tell. Those round porcelain plugs with a wire inside were fine in their day, but they are slow to react, easy to rewire incorrectly with the wrong gauge wire, and offer zero protection against electric shock. If your board still has them, it predates modern safety standards by decades.

Missing safety switches are the danger that matters most. A circuit breaker protects wiring from overload. A safety switch (RCD) protects people, cutting power in milliseconds when current leaks to earth, which is what happens when someone is being electrocuted. Plenty of older boards have one safety switch covering a couple of circuits, or none at all. Every circuit in your home should have one.

Then there are the physical symptoms: breakers that trip for no obvious reason, lights that flicker when the aircon starts, warm spots or discolouration on the panel, buzzing, or a burning smell near the board. Heat marks mean connections are deteriorating and arcing. None of these get better on their own.

Nuisance tripping deserves a special mention because people learn to live with it. Resetting the same breaker every week is not a personality quirk of your house. It is a symptom, and it means something, whether that is a failing appliance, a deteriorating cable or an overloaded circuit.

What an upgrade costs on the Sunshine Coast

For a straightforward domestic switchboard upgrade in Queensland, replacing an old board with a new enclosure, modern circuit protection and safety switches on every circuit, the market typically lands between $800 and $2,000. That assumes the existing location works, the wiring behind the board is serviceable and there are no nasty surprises.

Bigger jobs cost more, and it is worth understanding why. If the old board is mounted on an asbestos backing panel, common in homes built before 1990, that panel must be handled and disposed of properly, which adds cost. If the consumer mains coming into the house are undersized or deteriorated, or the board needs relocating, or the metering equipment needs work involving the network, jobs can run from $2,000 to $4,000 and beyond.

The number of circuits matters too. A small three-bedroom home with eight circuits is a different job from an acreage property with sheds, pool equipment, bore pumps and two dozen circuits. This is why any electrician quoting switchboard work sight unseen, without at least photos, is guessing.

These are market ranges, not a price list. The honest way to price a switchboard is to look at the actual board, which is exactly why we always start with an inspection rather than a number over the phone.

What actually happens during an upgrade

A proper upgrade is a planned half-day to full day of work. Power to the house goes off, the old equipment comes out, and a new enclosure goes in with modern protection for every circuit. Each circuit is tested, terminated properly and labelled clearly, so the next person, including future you at 10pm during a fault, can tell what everything does.

The modern standard is an RCBO on each circuit, a device combining the circuit breaker and safety switch in one unit. That means a fault on the fridge circuit trips the fridge circuit only, instead of one shared safety switch dropping half the house. It is a genuine day-to-day quality of life difference, not just a compliance box.

All the work must comply with AS/NZS 3000, the Wiring Rules, and Queensland's electrical safety legislation. At the end you receive certification confirming the installation was tested and complies. Keep it, because your insurer or a future buyer may ask for it.

While the board is open and the power is off is also the cheapest possible moment to deal with related items: surge protection, an extra circuit you have been putting off, or provisioning space for future solar or EV equipment. Good electricians will raise these options once, without pressure.

Solar, batteries and EV chargers start at the switchboard

Here is the thing nobody selling you a battery on the phone mentions: every solar system, battery and EV charger connects through your switchboard, and an old board frequently cannot take them. No spare ways, no room for the required protection, deteriorated equipment that should not be disturbed, or an asbestos panel nobody can legally drill into.

Discovering this after you have signed a solar contract is the expensive version. The install stalls, a variation appears for board work, and you have lost your negotiating position entirely. Discovering it before you sign costs you a photo or an inspection.

So if solar, a battery or an EV charger is anywhere on your horizon, get the board assessed first and fold any upgrade into your planning. Sequenced properly, board work done as part of a bigger energy project is more efficient than doing it as an emergency later.

The insurance angle nobody thinks about

Electrical faults are one of the leading causes of house fires in Australia, and insurers know it. Some ask directly about ceramic fuses or board age on renewal. More importantly, after a fire, the investigation will establish the cause, and an old board with known defects that was never addressed is not a comfortable place to be standing.

I am not going to tell you your insurer will definitely refuse a claim over an old switchboard, because policies differ. I will tell you that a compliant modern board with safety switches on every circuit removes the argument entirely, and usually costs less than one year of the premium people happily pay without thinking.

While you are thinking about household safety compliance, note that Queensland also requires interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in all dwellings from 1 January 2027. If your board is being upgraded anyway, it is a sensible time to check the alarms too.

The cheap first step

You do not have to commit to an upgrade to find out where you stand. Get this answered before signing any solar or battery contract, because board surprises after signing become expensive variations.

Does an old switchboard affect my home insurance?

It can. Some insurers ask about board age or ceramic fuses, and after any electrical fire the cause gets investigated. A compliant modern board removes the question entirely. I cannot speak for your policy, but I have never met anyone who regretted upgrading a genuinely tired board.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take and will I lose power?
