Why businesses are adding batteries

Solar cuts the daytime bill. A battery cuts the rest.

Most large sites already know what solar does. The part of the bill that is left is the part only storage can reach.

1

Cut the demand charge solar cannot reach

On most large business tariffs a big slice of the bill is a demand charge, set by your single highest half hour in the peak window. In South East Queensland that window is typically weekday evenings, when the sun is low or gone, so solar alone barely touches it. A battery that holds charge for that window and discharges through it is often the fastest paying part of the whole system.

2

Add storage to the solar you already have

BluePulse works AC coupled, which means it connects at your switchboard beside your existing solar inverters rather than replacing them. The solar your roof exports for a few cents at midday is stored and used at the times you would otherwise buy power at full price. Your existing solar keeps its own warranty and keeps running even if the battery is offline.

3

Keep critical loads running

The hybrid inverter has a built in transfer switch that Kstar rates at 10 milliseconds or less, and a generator input that needs no separate changeover switch. Cold rooms, servers, security, pumps and point of sale can be wired to a protected supply. What can be backed up, and for how long, is designed per site and written into your proposal.

Existing solar or new

It works with the solar you have, or the solar you are planning

The same BluePulse hardware connects either way. Which one suits depends on what is already on your roof.

Existing solar

AC coupled: add a battery to the solar you have

  • Connects at the main switchboard beside your current solar inverters
  • Nothing on the roof changes and your existing solar keeps its own warranty
  • Stores midday surplus and discharges through the evening peak
  • The solar keeps producing even if the battery is isolated for service
  • Usually the quickest path for a site that already has a good solar system
New solar and battery

DC coupled: one hybrid runs the panels and the battery

  • Panels connect straight into the hybrid inverter, 4 or 8 MPPTs
  • Up to twice the inverter rating in panels, so the battery fills earlier in the day
  • One conversion step between panel and battery instead of two
  • One monitoring platform and one warranty path for the whole system
  • Suits new builds, roof replacements and sites adding solar for the first time
Who it suits

Commercial battery storage for the way your site uses power

The hardware is the same. What changes is when your load peaks, and that is what we design around.

Warehouses and logistics

Big roofs, forklift charging and a late afternoon dispatch rush. Storage soaks up midday solar the building cannot use and covers the evening peak.

Factories and workshops

Machine start ups set the demand charge for the whole month. A battery discharging through those peaks flattens what the network sees.

Cold storage and food

Refrigeration runs all night and cannot be switched off. Storage shifts solar into the evening and can hold the cold rooms up through an outage.

Shopping centres and retail

Trading hours run past sunset, right through the peak window. Battery storage covers the hours solar misses.

Schools, churches and venues

Light weekday use and heavy events. A battery stores the quiet day's solar for the busy night, and the generator input suits sites that need to stay open.

Farms, packing sheds and pumps

Long feeders and unreliable supply. Works beside a generator with no separate changeover switch, on grid or off grid.

Not sure a battery stacks up for your site? Send us the bills and we will tell you straight.

Safety and build

Built for a car park, engineered like a data centre

Kstar's background is uninterruptible power for data centres. It shows in how the cabinet is put together.

Lithium iron phosphate cells

LFP is the most thermally stable of the mainstream lithium chemistries and the standard choice for stationary storage.

Layered detection and venting

Each cabinet carries carbon monoxide detection, audible and visual alarms, an exhaust fan, an explosion vent, an air inlet valve and a firefighting water inlet.

Climate controlled

Cabinets are cooled by their own air conditioner or intelligent air cooling, and are rated to operate from minus 30 to 50 degrees Celsius.

Built to live outside

IP54 cabinet with a C4 anti corrosion finish, which matters anywhere near the coast. The hybrid inverter is IP66.

Tested to the battery standards

Datasheets list IEC 62619, IEC 63056, IEC 62477, IEC 62040 and UN38.3, with UL 9540A fire testing listed on the 64 to 120 kWh cabinets. The 20 to 50 kW hybrid inverters list AS/NZS 4777.2.

Emergency stop on the door

A clearly marked emergency power off button and alarm beacon on the cabinet front, plus the isolation, signage and site plan we install around it.

How it runs

One contractor, from the bills to the switch on

Design, network application, installation and support all sit with us, so there is one phone number for the whole project.

  1. 1

    Send us the bills

Twelve months of bills, and interval data if your retailer can supply it. We read the network tariff and the demand lines, not just the total.

  2. 2

    Sizing and a written proposal

We model the battery against your real load shape and the peak window, look at the switchboard and the site, and give you a fixed written proposal with the expected saving stated prudently.

  3. 3

    Network application and engineering

We lodge the network connection application and organise the engineering sign off larger systems need. Network approval for a large system can take around three months, so this is where the program starts.

  4. 4

    Install and commission

Slab or plinth, cabinet delivery and placement, switchboard works, protection, testing and commissioning, run by our licensed crew and planned around your trading hours.

  5. 5

    Monitoring and support

The system is monitored through Kstar Sync, the battery is set to target your peak window, and you deal with the local contractor who installed it, not a call centre.

Approved equipment, checked before we lodge

Every grid connected system in Australia has to use inverters on the Clean Energy Council approved list. Kstar's BluePulse 20 to 50 kW hybrid inverters joined that list in September 2026, and larger sites can run several of them in parallel. The 80 to 125 kW models are newer to Australia, so before we lodge any network application we check every model number against the current approved list and design around equipment that is listed on that day. Your proposal names the exact models.

FAQ

Commercial Battery Questions

Straight answers from the licensed contractor doing the work.

What is the Kstar BluePulse, in plain English?

It is a commercial battery system made of two parts: an outdoor steel cabinet full of lithium iron phosphate battery modules, and a three phase hybrid inverter that mounts on the side of the cabinet or on a wall nearby. One cabinet holds between 64 and 261 kWh depending on the model, and the inverters run from 20 to 125 kW. The battery management, energy management and inverter are all Kstar's own, so it behaves as one system with one monitoring platform.

We already have solar. Can you add a battery without replacing it?

Yes. BluePulse supports AC coupling, which means the battery connects at your main switchboard alongside your existing solar inverters. Nothing on the roof changes. The battery charges from the surplus your solar would otherwise export and discharges when you would otherwise be buying power, including through the evening peak. We check your switchboard capacity, your existing inverters and your network agreement before we propose it.

How does a battery cut a business power bill?

Three ways. It lowers the demand charge by discharging through your peak window so the network never sees your full load. It stores cheap or free midday solar and uses it when grid power costs the most. And it lifts how much of your own solar you use on site instead of exporting it for very little. On large business tariffs the demand charge is often the biggest of the three, and it only shows up when you read the network lines on the bill, which is why we ask for the full bills rather than the totals.

What size battery does our site need?

It depends on the shape of your load, not just the size of your bill. We size from twelve months of bills and, where your retailer can supply it, half hourly interval data, then model the battery against your peak window. Because the demand charge is set by your single worst half hour in the month, we size with headroom and quote a prudent saving rather than a best case.

Will it keep us running in a blackout?

It can. The hybrid inverter has a built in transfer switch that Kstar rates at 10 milliseconds or less, and a backup output of up to the inverter's full rating, plus a generator input that needs no separate changeover switch. What is backed up and for how long depends on your loads, the battery size and how the switchboard is arranged, so backup is designed per site and the protected circuits are listed in your proposal. We do not promise whole site backup without doing the load assessment first.

Where does the cabinet go, and how big is it?

Outside, on a concrete slab or plinth, with clearances around it for airflow, service access and fire separation. The smaller cabinets are about 1.06 m wide, 1.38 m deep and 2.09 m tall and weigh 1.2 to 1.4 tonnes. The larger ones are about 1.32 m wide, 1.44 m deep and 2.42 m tall and weigh 1.8 to 2.7 tonnes, so delivery is by crane truck or forklift. We confirm the location, vehicle protection such as bollards, and the cable route when we look at the site.

Is it approved for grid connection in Australia?

Every grid connected system in Australia has to use inverters on the Clean Energy Council approved list. Kstar's BluePulse 20 to 50 kW hybrid inverters joined that list in September 2026, and larger sites can run several of them in parallel. The 80 to 125 kW models are newer to Australia, so before we lodge any network application we check every model number against the current approved list and design around equipment that is listed on that day. Your proposal names the exact models.

Are there rebates for a commercial battery?

Sometimes, and we will tell you plainly either way. At the time of writing the federal battery discount only applies to systems up to 100 kWh of nominal capacity and carries other conditions for business sites, so most cabinets in this range are sized for the bill saving rather than for a rebate. New solar installed with the battery can earn small scale technology certificates, which we handle for you and show in the proposal. Scheme rules change, and the rules that apply are the ones in force when your system is installed and commissioned.

What warranty does it carry?

Kstar's Australian and New Zealand terms give the battery cabinet and the hybrid inverter a 10 year product warranty, with a 10 year performance warranty on the battery's usable energy, and a 2 year warranty on accessories such as the cabinet air conditioner. The full terms are in the warranty documents on this page. Our installation work is covered by our lifetime workmanship warranty (conditions apply, see our Terms).

Who is Kstar?

Kstar was founded in 1993 and is listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. It is a large manufacturer of uninterruptible power supplies and data centre power equipment, with more than 4,000 staff and products sold in over 180 markets, and it builds its own inverters, battery management and energy management for the BluePulse range. Power electronics that keep data centres up is a good background for a commercial battery.

Do you install other commercial battery brands?

Yes. We design around the site first and choose equipment second, and we also install commercial systems from other manufacturers where they suit the job better. Your proposal explains why we have recommended what we have.
