House Rewiring on the Sunshine Coast
Old rubber insulated cable, ceramic fuses, no safety switches, lights that flicker or a smell you cannot place. We rewire older Sunshine Coast homes, in part or in full, and plan the work around the people still living in them.
Free estimate within 1 business day of receiving your photos. We can't estimate without photos, and we don't visit to estimate. If your photos can't settle it, we'll tell you why and book a paid visit at our standard call-out rate.

Nuvolt Electrical Solutions rewires older Sunshine Coast homes, in part or in full, from Caloundra to Noosa and the hinterland, replacing aged cable and fittings and adding safety switches so the house can run modern appliances safely. The work is done by a licensed electrician (QLD Lic 92489) working from our Nambour workshop.
Wiring does not last forever. Cable insulation ages, fittings go brittle, and homes wired long before safety switches existed are now running air conditioners, induction cooktops and EV chargers on circuits that were never designed for them. Nuvolt rewires homes across the Sunshine Coast: a single failing circuit, the part of the house an extension touches, or the whole home, with safety switch protection, a switchboard that suits it and a proper test at the end.
Rewiring Work, Scoped Honestly
Not every older home needs a full rewire. We quote for the wiring your home actually has, from clear photos of the switchboard and roof space.
Full house rewires
Every circuit replaced from the switchboard out: new cable, new power points, switches and light fittings, and circuits laid out for how a modern household uses power. It is the right answer when the original cable is rubber insulated or failing throughout, and it usually goes hand in hand with a new switchboard.
Partial rewires
Where one part of the home has old or damaged wiring and the rest has already been updated, we replace just those circuits. Common examples are an original wing of a house that was extended later, a circuit damaged by vermin or water, or old cable found during other work. We test the wiring that stays, so you know it is sound.
Renovations and extensions
Opening up walls for a renovation is the cheapest moment a home will ever get to rewire. We plan new circuits, power points and lighting around the new layout and replace old cable in the walls that are already open. In Queensland, extending an installation with new lighting and power point circuits also means both must be protected by safety switches.
Safety switches on every circuit
Many older homes have no safety switches, or one covering the power points only. A rewire is the natural time to protect every circuit, including lights, air conditioning, the oven, hot water and pool equipment, which is exactly what Queensland's Electrical Safety Office recommends for every home.
Signs Your Home May Need Rewiring
None of these on its own proves a home needs a rewire, but each is worth a licensed electrician's eyes. A burning smell or a scorched fitting is urgent: turn that circuit off at the switchboard if it is safe to do so, and call us.
- Old rubber insulated cable in the roof space or under the floor, often called VIR or TRS, that is cracked, brittle or crumbling
- Ceramic or rewireable fuses in the switchboard instead of circuit breakers
- No safety switches, or a single one covering only the power points
- Lights that flicker or dim when appliances start, or breakers that trip for no obvious reason
- A hot plastic or burning smell, or power points and switches that are warm, discoloured or scorched
- Brittle or cracked Bakelite switches, light fittings or power points
- A renovation or extension coming up, or a home that was extended in stages over the decades

Living in the house during a rewire
Most households stay home while we work. Power is off to the circuits being worked on, and we plan the order of rooms with you so the fridge, a bathroom and somewhere to sleep stay usable where the job allows. We work through the roof space and under the floor wherever we can, and only cut access holes in walls or ceilings where there is no other way in.
Rewire, switchboard and smoke alarms together
A new switchboard is often part of a rewire, because the old board is usually the same age as the cable and has no room for a safety switch on every circuit. Rewiring is also the easiest time to run cable for hardwired smoke alarms. Every Queensland home needs interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms by 1 January 2027, either hardwired or on a 10 year nonremovable battery, and a home that already has 240 volt alarms must replace them with 240 volt alarms.
Inspected, Rewired & Tested
Send Details
Tell us about the home. We send you a secure link to upload photos of the switchboard, the roof space and a few power points and light fittings, and look at what wiring it really has.
Free Estimate
A written estimate within 1 business day of receiving your photos, clear on what is being replaced, what stays, and where access holes are likely. Confirmed before anything is ordered.
Rewire
Old cable out and new cable in, circuits and fittings replaced room by room in the order we agreed, with the house left safe at the end of each day.
Test & Certify
Every circuit tested for insulation resistance, earth continuity, polarity and safety switch operation, with an electrical certificate provided where required.
House Rewiring Questions
Straight answers on old wiring, partial and full rewires, living at home during the work and safety switches, from the licensed contractor doing the work.
How do I know if my house needs rewiring?
The most reliable sign is the cable itself. Queensland's building regulator notes that installations wired before 1960 are more likely to fail, because the VIR and TRS rubber insulation used then can deteriorate until live conductors are exposed. Other signs are ceramic fuses, no safety switches, flickering lights, breakers that trip without a clear cause, and warm or scorched fittings. Age alone does not decide it, because plenty of older homes were rewired decades ago. An inspection of the roof space, subfloor and switchboard tells you what you actually have.
What is the difference between a partial and a full rewire?
A full rewire replaces every circuit in the home from the switchboard out. A partial rewire replaces only the circuits that need it, such as an original section of the house, a circuit damaged by rodents or water, or the part of the home a renovation touches. We test the wiring that stays, so a partial rewire is a decision made on test results rather than a guess. If testing shows the old cable is failing throughout, we will tell you that a partial job would be money spent twice.
Can we live in the house while it is being rewired?
In most cases, yes. Power is off to the circuits being worked on, we plan the order of rooms with you so the essentials stay usable where the job allows, and the house is left safe at the end of each day. A full rewire is more disruptive than a partial one, and an empty house or a home already stripped for renovation is simpler again. We talk through what each day looks like before the job starts, so nobody is caught out.
Will you have to cut holes in my walls and ceilings?
Sometimes, but usually fewer than people expect. Most cable runs go through the roof space and under the floor, and in many homes new cable can be drawn down wall cavities from above or up from below. Where there is no other access we cut small, neat access holes. Patching and painting are not electrical work, so we point out likely holes in the quote and you can arrange a plasterer or painter to follow us.
Do I have to install safety switches when I rewire or renovate?
New Queensland homes have needed safety switches on power point and lighting circuits since 2000, and when an existing home's installation is extended with additional lighting and power point circuits, both must be protected. The Electrical Safety Office also recommends safety switches on every circuit in the home, including air conditioning, the oven, hot water and pool equipment. A rewire is the easiest time to do exactly that.
We are buying or selling an older home. What should we know?
Queensland ties safety switch rules to property sales. A seller must declare whether a safety switch is installed for the power point circuits, and a buyer of a home without one must have one fitted to those circuits within 90 days of the transfer. Neither rule requires a rewire, but an inspection before or soon after settlement tells you whether the wiring behind those safety switches is worth keeping.
How does a rewire fit with a switchboard upgrade and smoke alarms?
They usually belong together. The old switchboard is normally the same age as the cable, often still on ceramic fuses, and short of space for a safety switch on every circuit. With every Queensland home needing interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms by 1 January 2027, a rewire is also the easiest moment to run cable for hardwired alarms. Combining the work means one round of access and testing instead of three separate jobs.
