All of it is invisible from the outside of the equipment, and all of it is obvious to a thermal camera long before it becomes a burnt-out board, a production stoppage or a fire. The number one target. A scan across a live board instantly shows joints, terminals, breakers and fuses running hotter than their neighbours, the classic signature of loose connections and failing gear. Ideal for older home boards and essential for commercial boards that work hard all day.

What a hot spot actually means
Electricity flowing through a poor connection meets resistance, and resistance turns current into heat. A joint running 20 or 30 degrees above its neighbours is telling you its clamp has relaxed, its contact surface has corroded, or its circuit is carrying more than it should. Left alone it loosens further, arcs, and eventually burns. Found on camera it is usually a small, cheap repair: tighten, clean, re-terminate or upgrade the circuit, then rescan to prove it is cool.

What does electrical thermal imaging actually detect?
It detects temperature differences, and in electrical systems abnormal heat is the universal symptom of trouble: loose or corroded connections, overloaded circuits and cables, failing breakers and fuses, phase imbalance on three phase supplies, and motors or equipment under mechanical stress. The camera does not see through covers, but scanning a live board surface and its terminations reveals the hot signatures of faults that a visual inspection simply cannot pick.
Do you need to shut off my power to do the scan?
No, and that is the point. Thermal imaging only works meaningfully on a live system under load, because a de-energised joint is a cold joint. We scan during normal operation, your home or business keeps running, and the equipment shows us how it genuinely behaves at working temperature. It is one of the least disruptive inspections in the electrical trade.
Is this worth doing on a normal family home?
For a newer home with a modern board, a periodic safety check usually covers you. Where a home scan genuinely earns its money is an older or coastal board, a home with solar, a battery or an EV charger pulling sustained current, a board that has had decades of add-ons, or any circuit already showing symptoms like warm outlets or nuisance tripping. It also pairs well with a pre-purchase inspection: heat problems in a board you are about to buy are worth knowing about.
How often should a business have its switchboards scanned?
Annually is the common rhythm for commercial boards, and busier or harsher sites, such as workshops, coastal premises, and anywhere running heavy machinery, justify six-monthly. Some insurers ask for periodic thermographic inspection of switchboards outright. The practical answer is to put scanning on the same schedule as your other electrical maintenance so it happens automatically, which is exactly how we run it in our maintenance programs.
What do I get at the end of a scan?
Findings in plain language with the thermal images themselves, so you can see each hot spot rather than take our word for it, plus a written quote for any repairs worth doing. Where nothing is wrong, you get that in writing too, which is a genuinely useful record for insurance and for tracking the board's condition over the years. After any repair we rescan to confirm the fault is gone.
Can thermal imaging find why my breaker keeps tripping?
Often, yes, and quickly. Persistent tripping means something on that circuit is wrong: an overload, a failing appliance, a damaged cable or a deteriorating connection, and most of those show as heat somewhere along the path. Combined with standard electrical fault-finding, a scan shortens the hunt dramatically because it points at the hot component instead of leaving us to test everything in sequence.
Who does the scan, a technician or an electrician?
A licensed electrician, and that matters. The camera finds the heat, but interpreting whether a warm joint is normal load behaviour or a developing fault, and then actually opening the board and fixing it on the spot where safe, is electrical work.
