When an electric hot water system stops making hot water, the tank usually gets the blame, but most of the time the fault is electrical: a burnt out heating element, a failed thermostat, a tripped safety switch or a problem on the hot water circuit itself. Those are electrician repairs, they are usually far cheaper than a new system, and they are often same visit fixes. Element and thermostat replacement
The classic no hot water fault. Elements burn out and thermostats drift or fail with age, and both are standard replacements on most storage tanks. We test the system properly, replace the failed parts with quality equivalents and verify the tank heats correctly before we leave.
Circuits, safety switches and switchboard faults
Sometimes the tank is fine and the problem is upstream: a tripping safety switch, a failed breaker, damaged cable or a tired contactor on the off peak circuit. We trace the fault to its actual cause rather than swapping parts on guesswork, and repair the circuit properly.
Off peak and tariff connections
Electric storage tanks on the right tariff heat overnight at cheaper rates. We wire and connect hot water systems to controlled load tariffs, sort the switchboard side of tariff changes, and make sure a replacement tank ends up connected the way the old one was supposed to be.
Heat pump and new system wiring
Heat pump hot water uses around a third of the electricity of a standard electric tank and pairs beautifully with solar. When you replace a system, we handle the electrical side: the circuit, isolator, protection and connection, coordinated with your plumber so the changeover is clean.
What Your Hot Water Is Telling You
Hot water systems usually give warnings before they quit. These symptoms point at an electrical fault:
- No hot water at all, with the tank full and no leaks: classic element or thermostat failure
- Water not as hot as it used to be, or running out fast: often one failed element in a twin element tank
- Water too hot or fluctuating: a thermostat failing in the unsafe direction, worth prompt attention
- The safety switch or breaker for the hot water circuit tripping: a fault in the element or wiring
- Hot water only sometimes: off peak control or contactor issues rather than the tank itself
- A tank over 10 to 12 years old with a fresh fault: time to weigh repair against replacement honestly

Repair or replace? Straight answer
A failed element or thermostat on a tank in good condition is absolutely worth repairing, at a fraction of replacement cost. A tank that is rusting, leaking from the cylinder or well past its warranty years is not worth new parts, and we will say so rather than sell you a repair that buys eighteen months. If replacement is the honest answer, we quote the electrical side and can point you at the heat pump option and its rebates before you commit to another standard tank.
Where the electrician ends and the plumber begins
Hot water sits across two trades. Elements, thermostats, circuits, tariffs, isolation and all wiring are electrician work, and that is what we do. Water connections, valves, the tank swap itself and leaks are plumbing work. On replacements we coordinate the electrical side with your plumber so nobody is waiting on anybody, and on electrical only repairs no plumber is needed at all.

I have no hot water. Is it the tank or something electrical?
If the tank is full and not leaking, the odds strongly favour electrical: a burnt out element, a failed thermostat, or a tripped breaker or safety switch on the hot water circuit. First check your switchboard for a tripped switch. If resetting it does not bring heat back within a few hours, or it trips again, stop resetting and book us in: repeated tripping means a real fault, usually a failed element leaking to earth.
How long should an electric hot water element last?
Elements commonly last five to ten years depending on water quality and usage, and thermostats age similarly. On the Sunshine Coast, water chemistry and coastal conditions can shorten that. The good news is both are standard, economical replacements on most storage tanks, and replacing them on an otherwise healthy tank routinely buys years more service.
Why does my hot water run out so quickly now?
Many electric tanks have two elements, and when one fails the system limps along on the other: you still get hot water, just less of it, slower. Sediment buildup and a drifting thermostat produce similar symptoms. We test both elements and the thermostats and tell you exactly which it is, and the fix is usually a same visit part replacement.
What is off peak hot water and should I be on it?
Off peak, or controlled load, is a separate tariff where the network heats your tank during cheaper periods, typically overnight, at a much lower rate per kilowatt hour. Most electric storage tanks should be on it unless solar is doing the heating. If you have solar, the better play is often heating the tank from your own excess generation during the day. We look at your setup at the inspection and tell you which arrangement your household actually wins with.
Is heat pump hot water worth it?
For most households replacing an electric tank, yes. A heat pump uses roughly a third of the electricity of a resistive tank because it moves heat rather than generating it, works well in the Queensland climate, and currently attracts rebates that meaningfully cut the purchase price. Paired with solar it gets even cheaper to run. When your current tank dies is the natural moment to switch, and we wire the new system and its circuit as part of the changeover.
Can you replace my whole hot water system?
We do the complete electrical side: circuit, protection, isolator, tariff connection and hookup, tested and certified. The water side, meaning the tank swap, valves and pipe work, is plumbing, and we coordinate with your plumber so the job flows as one. If you do not have a plumber, ask: we work alongside good local ones regularly.
My hot water safety switch keeps tripping. Is that dangerous?
It is the safety system doing its job, but it is telling you something is leaking current, most often a degraded element letting water reach the electrical side. Do not keep resetting it and do not bypass anything. Book us to test the system: element replacement usually resolves it, and the test tells us definitively whether the fault is the element, the thermostat, the cable or the switchboard.
